This visitor seems not to be very impressed by the presents of the Lenin bronze in the Kunsthistorische Museum here in Berlin ....

In October last year I spent a day in Dresden for the first time in my life.... the result is now online, the printed version in a special Dresden supplement in some editions of tomorrows "Die Zeit".

Actually I wanted to go out this morning to catch some of the new snow, but then I got delayed, and when I got there where I wanted to be, finally, all I found was a cold and wet morning, so I took refuge in the hall of the Kunsthistorische Museum.

For the last three days I was looking through a number of boxes, that I had not opened for years, I discovered long lost friends, good material for painting still lives, and a few sketches I made in Brighton a decade ago, I wonder whether I will be able to make something out of that material too.

The orange underground train going over-overground is certainly Berlin, but the house at the back reminds me always of Paris, so it is no great surprise that this is one of my favourite spots in this town, the best of two worlds in one place.

Die orangefarbene U-Bahn die hier oben auf einer Brücke fährt ist ganz bestimmt Berlin, das Haus im Hintergrund errinert mich aber immer an Paris, so ist es keine große Überraschung dass dies einer meiner Lieblingsplätze in dieser Stadt ist, das beste aus zwei Welten an einem Platz zusammen.

Another morning I spent in the Köpenick Schlossgardens. The stormy sky, the dark clouds, and the occasional ray of sunlight made a dramatic setting. Not quite Glenbogle, but a very Scottish sky never the less.

Das Schloss

I had this very vivid dream last night, I had to go to Venice, to paint a portrait...., so this morning I went to Köpenick, that is not Venice of course, but it is only 5 stations away from my studio by tram, and it has got bridges and water, and a castle.... this afternoon then, a package arrived by special delivery with a book by Thomas Mann, "Death in Venice".... what a coincidence...

Ich hatte letzte Nacht einen sehr lebhaften Traum. Ich war auf einer Reise nach Venedig, um dort ein Portrait zu malen... heute morgen dann fuhr ich nach Köpenick, natürlich ist das nicht mit Venedig zu vergleichen, aber es ist nur 5 Haltestellen mit der Strassenbahn entfernt, und es gibt dort Brücken, Wasser, und ein Schloss.... heute Nachmittag kam dann ein Paket per Boten bei mir an, darin war ein Buch, "Tod in Venedig" von Thomas Mann, welch ein wunderbarer Zufall...

One of the features of my studio is a crane on the ceiling, which runs through the whole studio making a mighty noise, its steering device is at the end of a rope.

Eine Attraktion in meinem Atelier ist eine Decken-Krananlage, die durch den gesamten Raum fährt, dabei macht sie einen gewaltigen Lärm. Die Steuerung hängt am Ende eines Seils.

At night in UFM

It is night in Upperfairmeadow, the security guard passed my studio window with his German shepherd dog hours ago, closing the gate, checking the locks... it is very quiet now, only far away one can see lights, coming from another part of the estate. Here the work goes on, a factory, working day and night behind the barbed wire fence, time for me to call it a day. Maybe Mountbatten the fox will come and escort me home as he sometimes does... it is night in Oberschöneweide.

Es ist Nacht in Oberschöneweide, der Wachmann ging schon vor Stunden mit seinem Schäferhund an meinem Atelier vorbei, er hat nach dem rechten gesehen und dann das grosse Tor zum Gelände verschlossen. Es ist sehr ruhig, nur von weiten sieht man Licht. Da wird noch gearbeitet, Tag und Nacht, in der Fabrik hinter dem Stacheldraht weit hinten auf dem Gelände. Es ist Zeit für mich, nach Hause zu gehen. Vieleicht treffe ich wieder Mountbatten den Fuchs, der mich manchmal begleitet... es ist Nacht in Upperfairmeadow.

The top of my piano, I am afraid is always covered with all sorts of things. If you play they make for an interesting added resonance. When I was a child I used to put silver foil in the wires, that was an interesting sound too.

Oben auf meinem Klavier liegen immer allerlei Sachen. Wenn man spielt, agieren sie oft als weiterer nicht immer erwünschter Resonanzkörper. Als Kind habe ich oft Staniolpapier auf die Seiten gelegt, das ergab auch einen interessanten Klang.

First I saw the shadow, and then the man. It looked to me as if the little shadow was a wee bit tired, trodding behind the man like a child, happy to go home again.

Als erstes fiel mir der Schatten auf, dann der dazugehörige Mensch. Der Schatten sah ein wenig müde aus, hinter dem Mann hergehend wie ein kleines Kind das froh ist, bald wieder nach Hause zu kommen.

Am Kamin

I always have a fireplace in my studio, well a mock up anyway. It is a very practical thing to have. First of all it brings a very special atmosphere into a room. Secondly you can place things on the mantelpiece, which is always good, and thirdly you can lean on it in case you have to give a speech or something like that...

Ich habe immer einen Kamin in meinen Ateliers, meistens nur eine Attrappe leider. Aber das ist gleichwohl eine ganz brauchbare Sache. Ersteinmal verbreitet so ein Kamin eine besondere Atmosphäre in einem Raum. Zweitens kann man auf den Kaminsims Dinge stellen, was immer sehr praktisch ist und drittens kann man sich daranlehnen, wenn man eine Rede halten muss, oder so ...

Ein Tagesbild

A daily painting in a daily painting. For the last few weeks I thought that this, my daily project, would come to a sudden end, I feared, that it might be no longer possible to work the way I work in this country, facing more and more obstacles completely un-logical to an artists mind and feelings. Today is the first day that I feel hope again that I may be able to continue my work. My special thanks to Frau Dr. Manske and my good friend Herr Dr. Frank-Walter Hülsenbeck.

Ein Tagesbild in einem Tagesbild. In den letzten Wochen hatte ich Angst, dass dieses, mein tägliches Projekt, möglicherweise zu einem plötzlichen Ende kommt, ich befürchtete, es wäre in diesem Land für mich bald nicht mehr länger möglich so zu arbeiten wie ich es tue angesichts von Hürden und Bestimmungen, die für einen Künstler unlogisch, fremd und feindselig erscheinen. Heute ist der erste Tag seit langem, an dem ich wieder Hoffnung verspüre, dass es doch weitergehen kann. Mein besonderen Dank dafür an Frau Dr. Manske und an meinen Freund Herrn Dr. Frank-Walter Hülsenbeck.

Die Boje

I probably painted this scene a few times before already. The difference now is, that I only have to move my easel to my studio window to see this picture. At the moment the magic starts at around 6:30 in the evening.

Ich habe diese Szenen sicherlich schon ein paarmal zuvor gemalt. Der Unterschied ist jetzt aber, dass ich meine Staffelei nur an mein Atelierfenster bewegen muss, um dieses Spektakel zu sehen. Im Moment beginnt es immer so um 18:30.

A simple still life. Although very dark in its background, the light source on the bottle is a ray of sunshine coming through the studio door.

Ein einfaches Stillleben. Obwohl der Hintergrund sehr dunkel ist, ist die Lichtquelle auf der Flasche ein Sonnenstrahl, der durch die offene Ateliertür fällt.

Another walk though the forest, it is the time one wants to record every moment of, as the changes are so fast... a bitter sweet feeling passes my soul when I watch those changing autumn scenes...

Wieder ein Spaziergang durch den Wald. Es ist die Zeit, in der man jeden Moment festhalten möchte, da die Veränderungen so schnell fortschreiten, ein fast schmerzliches Gefühl der Sehnsucht ergreift mich immer wieder wenn ich diese sich verändernden Herbststimmungen erlebe...

I am very honoured that the French newspaper Le Monde used 4 of my paintings in their special magazine about china. I received my copy today in the post, but I believe you can get it in Paris too. Maybe it is time for a trip to the most beautiful city in the world.

Ich fühle mich sehr geehrt, dass die französische Zeitung Le Monde in ihrem Sondermagazin über China vier meiner Bilder verwendet hat. As I did not mention the bowl that was in the painting, yesterday, it got so cross with me, that it refused to be painted today, so I had to do without it.

Dancing in the Rain

The other night, I was working on a larger painting, I heard the noise of a step ladder being placed on the floor. A very unusual sound at this time of night, on an empty square near to an industrial area. The square is very well lit at night, like a very large stage or sports ground, but usually when its cold and raining it is also quite deserted. Not so this time, two girls, equipped with this step ladder were dancing in the rain, very beautifully. The magic of Upperfairmeadow, dancing in the rain.

Vor ein paar Nächten, ich malte noch an einem großen Bild, hörte ich draussen das Geräusch einer Klappleiter, die auf den Boden gestellt wurde. Ein recht ungewöhnliches Geräusch, nachts, auf einem leeren Platz neben einer Industrieanlage. Der Platz ist hell beleuchtet, wie eine große Bühne oder wie ein Sportplatz, meistens ist hier aber keiner wenn es kalt ist und regnet. Nicht so dieses Mal. Zwei Mädchen mit einer Klappleiter tanzten im Regen, wie schön. Das ist die Magie von Oberschöneweide, ein Tanz im Regen.
