Ready to...

What to paint on a day like this, well I got a bottle of my favourite champagne, and I would like to toast to you all. It was a fantastic year together with all of you following my blog and my endeavours as a painter, I thank you for that with all my heart, and I hope we will have an even better year together in 2008 !

Was soll man an einem Tag wie diesem malen? Nun, ich habe eine Flasche meines Lieblingschampagners besorgt und möchte symbolisch damit mit Ihnen allen anstossen. Cathedral in the Mist

I painted it again, this view of the cathedral. I pass it nearly every day, and every time, this view makes my heart beat quicker. Today it looked like a ship to me, bereft of all its glory, but still looking strong and beautiful. The cold light together with the rising mist seemed to carry it away any time soon.

Ich habe ihn nocheinmal gemalt, diesen Blick auf den Dom. Fast jeden Tag gehe ich hier vorbei und jedes Mal lässt er mein Herz höher schlagen. Heute sah der Dom für mich wie ein riesiges Schiff aus, von seinem ganzen Glanz beraubt aber gleichwohl immer noch stark und schön. Das kalte Licht zusammen mit dem aufsteigenden Nebel schien es jeden Moment fortzutragen.

Coming and Going

A scene at the main door of the cathedral in Berlin. It is a rather small door for a building of that size, but very high, people are coming and going, shapes of shadows taking the picture further away from reality and weave their own pattern.

Eine Szene am Haupteingang des Berliner Doms. Diese Tür ist relativ schmal für ein Gebäude dieser Größe, jedoch von ziemlicher Höhe. Leute kommen und gehen, Schattenformen entfernen das Bild mehr und mehr von der Realität, und weben ihre eigenen Muster.

December Light

A young man standing at the corner of Rosenthalerstreet Sophienstreet, eating a bag of roasted almonds. There is something very intensive about the sun light this December, the few times it shows up. At least that´s what I observe, maybe it was always like this and I just did not notice, but here I tried to capture it.

Ein junger Mann an der Ecke Rosenthaler und Sopienstraße, der eine Tüte geröstete Mandeln isst. Das Sonnenlicht hat diesen Dezember etwas ganz besonderes an sich, die paar Male die es sich zeigt. Zumindest fällt es mir so auf, vielleicht war es ja immer schon so, ohne daß ich es bemerkte, ich habe jedenfalls in dem heutigen Bild versucht, diesen Eindruck festzuhalten.

Christmas Eve

The Day before the 24th of December

Today it was a ray of sunlight that picked out some details in the cathedral, by tomorrow night this place will be lit with candle light, the air filled with hymns and prayers to celebrate. I hope that this day will be a peaceful day for all people, whatever their faith is.

Heute hob ein Sonnenstrahl Details im Berliner Dom hervor, morgen abend wird dieser Ort dann von Kerzenlicht erleuchtet sein und es werden ihn festliche Lieder und Gebeter erfüllen. Ich hoffe, daß der morgige Tag für alle Menschen, egal welcher Religion sie angehören, ein friedlicher sein wird.

The Eternal Light

High above the central aisle of the cathedral stands this chandelier casting an ethereal light into space, as if to remind everyone that this is all about something different then just a tourist attraction with lovely columns and bibles lying around.

Hoch über dem Mittelschiff des Berliner Doms steht dieser Leuchter und wirft ein ätherisches Licht in die Welt, als ob er alle in der Kirche daran erinnern wollte, daß es sich hier um mehr handelt als um eine Touristenattraktion mit schönen Säulen und herumliegenden Bibeln.

Polishing a Glass / Nr. 400 !

Today is time for a little celebration. Today I painted my 400th blog painting, and I choose the kitchen of the Quatsch Comedy Club as the image for it. It goes without saying that all this was made possible with your support out there. Thank you for that a 400 times!
As you may know from the past 100th, 200th and 300th painting I would like to auction this painting again through an e-mail auction. If you like the painting you just send me an e-mail with your kind offer, the highest bidder gets the painting, lines are open till coming Sunday 10pm my time.

In the Kitchen

Last night at the Quatsch Comedy Club I was taken into the kitchen to look for motifs to paint. Never mind backstage, but being given access to the kitchen is a real privilege indeed. To have a stranger looking around in such a busy place for images to paint, is as much needed as a hole in the head, so thanks to all kitchen staff of the club for your patience.

Gestern abend im Quatsch Comedy Club durfte ich in der Küche auf Motivsuche gehen. Hinter der Bühne ist es ja schon beeindruckend, aber Zugang zu einer Gastronomieküche zu bekommen ist ein wirkliches Privileg. Schließlich brauchen die dort Arbeitenden einen wildfremden Menschen, der an so einem lebhaften Ort Ausschau nach Motiven zum Malen hält, so nötig wie ein Loch im Kopf. Also, vielen herzlichen Dank an das ganze Küchenpersonal des Clubs für Eure Geduld mit mir!

Light in the Cathedral

What struck me most about this impression in the cathedral was on the one hand the manmade light of the candles, and on the other the light coming through the windows from outside.

Was mich an diesem Eindruck im Dom so sehr fesselte, war einerseits das vom Menschen geschaffene Licht der Kerzen und zum anderen das Licht, das von draußen durch die Fenster hereinkam.

I was asked to give you a guided studio tour, well here it is: My studio is situated in a backyard in Berlin and consists of two former small flats that I had converted into two big rooms.

A Pavement of Gold

If you think that you have to go to Dubai to find a pavement of gold, you are mistaken. I found it just a few streets away. The setting and time of year is important though, a misty evening, wet pavements, dim street lighting, and all you have to do is to squint your eyes and there it is, a pavement made from purest gold.

Wenn Sie glauben, Sie müssten erst nach Dubai um ein Trottoir aus Gold zu finden, irren Sie. Ich fand ein solches nur ein paar Straßen entfernt. Jedoch, die Atmosphäre und Jahreszeit sind schon wichtig, ein nebliger Abend, nasse Bürgersteige, gedämpfte Straßenbeleuchtung und alles was Sie dann machen müssen, ist, ein wenig mit den Augen zu blinzeln und schon ist es da: ein Trottoir aus purstem Gold.

The Professor

A visitor to my studio, drinking a glass of wine. It is a good friend of mine in a very thoughtful conversation we must have had. The sketch for todays painting I did a year ago, but it was this time of year, so when I found it this morning I thought it would be just right to paint it today. One year on my friend has been appointed to be a professor, and I am very proud of him.

Besuch im Atelier, ein Glas Wein trinkend. Es handelt sich um einen guten Freund von mir und anscheinend hatten wir damals eine sehr nachdenkliche Unterhaltung. Ich habe die Skizze für das heutige Bild vor einem Jahr gemacht, ziemlich zu dieser Jahreszeit und so dachte ich heute morgen als sie mir in die Hände fiel, es wäre genau richtig das Motiv heute zu malen. Mittlerweile ist der zum Professor berufen worden und ich bin sehr stolz auf ihn.

A Private Audience

Next to the main church in the Berlin Cathedral, there is a small adjacent chapel, a more intimate and quiet place to worship and pray, or to light a candle for someone in need.

Neben dem Hauptschiff des Berliner Doms gibt es eine kleine Kapelle gleich daneben, ein mehr intimer und ruhigerer Platz für Andacht und Gebet oder, um eine Kerze für jemanden zu entzünden.

Watching the Show

Two men watching the show at the Quatsch Comedy Club from the balcony, soon, when the new laws to ban smoking come into force, this will be an image of the past. In case that you start to wonder because of some of the other paintings in this series, yes there are also men in Berlin that actually have hair on their heads !

Zwei Männer die vom Balkon aus die Show im Quatsch Comedy Club verfolgen, bald, wenn die neuen Anti-Rauchergesetze in Kraft treten, wird ein Bild wie dieses der Vergangenheit angehören. Falls Sie sich übrigens schon aufgrund einiger Bilder in dieser Serie gewundert haben .... doch, es gibt in Berlin auch noch ein paar Männer mit Haaren auf dem Kopf.

In front of the QCC

Evening, it is cold, people go to the theatre, a festive mood, the lights of the Christmas decorations, the queue in front of the box office, all what is really missing is a bit of snow ....

Abend, es ist kalt, Menschen strömen ins Theater, eine festliche Stimmung, die Lichter der Weihnachtsdekoration, eine Schlage vor der Abendkasse, das Einzige was wirklich fehlt ist ein weinig Schnee ....

Today now my last sketch from Monday morning. I somehow am still nourishing myself on that morning, with sunlight and a bit of warmth, the days since have, again, been grey. But tomorrow I will return to the glittering world of the theatre, if there is no light, we make our own.

Heute also meine letzte Skizze von Montag Morgen. Irgendwie zehre ich immer noch von diesem Morgen mit Sonne und zumindest etwas Wärme, die Tage danach waren wieder grau. Aber morgen werde ich in die Glitzerwelt des Theaters zurückkehren, wenn es kein Licht gibt, machen wir uns unser eigenes.

Going through my sketches I made on Monday, I found two more motifs I wanted to paint. This is one of them. A closer look to the left, while yesterdays gave a more general view.

Beim Durchsehen meiner Skizzen, die ich am Montag gemacht habe, fand ich zwei weitere Motive, die ich malen möchte. Dies ist eines davon. Ein mehr nach links gerichteter, detaillierter Blick, während das gestrige Motiv einen weitläufigeren zeigte.

I took a little break from the world of show-business today. But my eye caught something not less theatrical this morning while enjoying a bit of sunshine ( very rare these days ) the entrance to the Cathedral, the Berliner Dom.

Heute habe ich mal eine Auszeit von der Welt des Showbusiness genommen. Aber mein Blick fing etwas nicht weniger Theatralisches ein, heute morgen als ich etwas Sonnenschein genoss (sehr rar dieser Tage) - den Eingang zum Berliner Dom.

The Chairman

Heart and soul of every club night at the Quatsch Comedy Club in Berlin is the chairman. He is the conductor not only of the comedians but also of the audience. This is Thomas Nicolai, a very fine comedian in his own right...wait till he starts to sing you a lullaby in the style of a hard rock band, that will make Ozzy Osborne look like a kindergarten child, and when he starts to impersonate Herbert Grönemeyer, everyone in the audience is dancing on the tables.

Das Herzstück jeder Clubnacht im Quatsch Comedy Club in Berlin ist der Moderator. Er dirigiert nicht nur die Komiker sondern auch das Publikum. Hier ist es Thomas Nicolai, selbst ein begnadeter Komiker ... wenn er Ihnen ein Wiegenlied im Stil einer Hardrock Band singt, wirkt Ozzy Osborne nur noch wie ein Kindergartenkind, und wenn Thomas Nicolai dann noch anfängt, Herbert Grönemeyer nachzumachen, tanzen alle im Publikum auf den Tischen.

Emmi and Beethoven

Madame Emmi did not look too amused, when her speech was interrupted by Valentins very own interpretation of Beethoven's 5th symphony..... Looking at the last 4 paintings I realised I had somehow created something like a flip-book.

Madame Emmi schien nicht sehr erfreut, als Valentin ihre Ansprache mit seiner sehr eigenwilligen Interpretation von Beethovens fünfter Symphonie unterbrach ... Wenn ich mir die letzten vier Bilder so ansehe, stelle ich fest, daß ich da unwillkürlich soetwas wie ein Daumenkino geschaffen habe.

...and finally here she is, Madame Emmi, centre stage at the Quatsch Comedy Club, her appearance is so breathtaking that even Valentin stops to play the piano..... for a while that is...

... und hier ist sie endlich, Madame Emmi, im Mittelpunkt der Bühne des Quatsch Comedy Club. Ihr Auftritt ist so grandios, daß selbst Valentin aufhört Klavier zu spielen, für einen Augenblick...

Where do you find a comedian and accomplished pianist with a heavy Russian accent? at the Quatsch Comedy Club , I tell you after watching Emmi & Herr Willnowsky, Rachmaninov will never sound the same again. You still have to wait for Madame Emmi though..... but tomorrow is another day...

Wo finden Sie einen Komiker und hervorragenden Pianisten mit einem starken russischen Akzent? im Quatsch Comedy Club , ich verischere Ihnen, nachdem Sie Emmi & Herr Willnowsky gesehen haben wird sich Rachmaninov nie wieder wie bisher anhören. Auf Madame Emmi müssen Sie allerdings noch warten ... aber morgen ist ja auch noch ein Tag ...
